Insider/Out- Phase II  - Maine artists Russell D'Alessio and Tom Coyle go head-to-head in a collaboration over two consecutive evenings at D'Alessio Gallery to create not just one, but two large works of art.

Gallery owner Russell D'Alessio is known for his brightly animated graphic imagery. Tom Coyle's wildly irreverent paintings blend humor and darkness. Together, the two artists will create two unforgettable new artworks.
Collaborations are nothing new in the art world. Notable co-creators include:

  • Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat

  • Pablo Picasso and Gjon Mili

  • Luis Brunel and Salvador Dali

  • Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray

But the inspiration for "Insider/Out - Phase II: The Collaboration" stemmed not from art history but from a free-flowing conversation between the two artists and gallery manager Linda D'Alessio at a dinner party early this year.
"We were talking about street art around the world, and how these artists often paint over earlier work in ways that enhance the original," says Linda D'Alessio. "Agreeing that these unplanned mergers of talent can result in unique and sometimes compelling artwork, we hit on the idea of a similar collaboration -- only live."

Painting spontaneously, not knowing where the first brushstrokes will take them, the artists will paint on separate panels the first night, swapping panels the next evening to complete the project.
"The substrates we selected are the plywood sheets that cover and protect the gallery doors in the winter -- in that sense, we'll be creating genuine street art," says Russell D'Alessio.

Mark your calendars: Wednesday, August 30, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. AND Thursday, August 31, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
D’Alessio Gallery will host its own artistic collaboration between Russell D’Alessio and Tom Coyle,  music by 25.6K Oliver D'Alessio, spirits and goodies served. Public invited.

Whether you pop in for a short time or stay for the evening, this is a must-attend event!

As Seen in Decor Maine Magazine June 2021

"In his artists’ statement, Russell D’Alessio declares: “If I could paint with the fire of Picasso and the soul of Chagall, I would certainly find my nirvana.” However, visitors to the gallery Russell and wife Linda manage in Bar Harbor merely have to behold Russell’s works to find bliss.

Thanks to themes of “childlike innocence” and “eternal youth” and vivid animation coloring each canvas, paper, and multimedia vessel, a stroll around D’Alessio Gallery is as much a joyous emotional adventure as hiking nearby Cadillac Mountain is a physical one.

“For Russ, painting is more than just drawing what you see; it is an adventure, a journey of discovery,” Linda says. - Heather Chapman"
